Bakers
Top of the list regarding
French shops is the baker. The best baker is a highly topical subject
in all French towns. Needless to say this is one area that we won't
advise you on, other than:- Buy fresh on the day you want to eat
the bread/croissants, and avoid the supermarket. Good bakers are
often near nice cafes, which is very handy, most cafes are happy
to allow you to eat a croissant that you have bought elsewhere whilst
having a coffee.
Local Market
The local market is the
place to go to check out the local produce and haggle for a bargain.
Don't miss it! It occurs every Wednesday morning, starting at around
7 am. Be there early to get a bargain. You will find mountains of
fresh seasonal vegetables, huge fish display, (excellent quality)
meat, local produce such as honey, olives, tapenade, pates, nougat,
etc. We like to arrive early in the summer, get a salad and roast
chicken and a few goats cheese for lunch and then retire to a café
for a cool drink and watch the world go by. Try your French out,
it's good fun for everybody!
Supermarkets
There are two easy to
reach supermarkets The one in town is the smaller of the two and
good for everyday items and has a pharmacy attached. If you want
to see the Giant type you need to travel slightly further afield.
This one though is vast and stocks everything from cookers to bicycles
(amazingly cheap), fishing rods to clothes. If you want your Le
Creuset pans (forgot to look in the market?) you can get them here.
It really will cater for everything you need, and it has a restaurant
if you need a break, but our advice is don't eat there when you
have the pick of the best restaurants in Salon.
Other Shops
Salon itself has a wide
range of shops providing everything from gifts to clothes, local
produce and specialised pastries. You will find all the shops you
need in the town centre.
